What is chlorhexidine and what is it used for?

15 Oct 2022 | Curiosità

Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum disinfectant which is generally (but not only) used for the oral care after dental surgeries or in the case of gum inflammation; in fact, it is found in the composition of sprays, mouthwashes or toothpastes.

However, care must be taken and Do not use products that contain chlorhexidine continuously and without a prescription of the dentist, as prolonged use of this substance can cause a number of side effects:

🔴 irritation mouth

🔴 stains on the teeth

🔴 dry mouth

🔴 unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth

🔴 decrease in taste sensation

It must then be remembered that chlorhexidine destroys bacteria that develop in the coating (plaque) that forms on teeth between brushing, thus preventing the onset of gingivitis; however, chlorhexidine does not prevent the formation of plaque and tartar!

So proper tooth brushing and flossing are necessary and important even when you are using a chlorhexidine product.
