Periodontitis: if a family member has it, does the risk increase?

People who have one or more relatives in their family who have suffered from periodontitis have greater likelihood to manifest in turn theInflammation of the gums.

For example, some people with severe periodontitis have genetic factors that affect immune factor interleukin-1 (IL-1), a cytokine involved in the inflammatory response; these individuals are up to 20 times more likely to develop advanced periodontitis than those without these genetic factors.

This does not mean that if you have cases of periodontitis in your family then this disease is inevitable, but it is likely that Paying more attention to one's oral hygiene can really make a difference!
