Sleep apnea: why can the dentist help?

May 2, 2022 | Pathologies

Le sleep apnea (also called "sleep apnea") represent one of the most common sleep disorders; their exact name is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and occur when a person - while sleeping - has pauses in breathing that may be total or partial and last from a few seconds to several minutes.

This Directly affects the quality of rest For, with each interruption, sleep changes from deep to shallow.

The most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are:

  • breathlessness overnight
  • snoring

However, this pathology also presents itself through a series of side effects appearing as a consequence of the lack of sonno or the poor quality of the resulting rest.

Not everyone knows that dentists play an essential role in the treatment of sleep apnea: apnea can be due to tonsillar disorders, pharyngeal obstruction, pulmonary ventilatory disorders, or other problems that impede the passage of air but, on many occasions, it can also be caused by problems in the mouth, jaw structure or maxillofacial defects.

In the case of an oral problem, the most common and effective treatment in these cases is the placement of a splint, tailor-made for each patient, which when it comes placed during the night allows the correct opening of the upper airway to be maintained to prevent snoring as well as shortness of breath and interruptions in breathing.

In our studio we use the SomnoDent® oral appliance, a mandibular advancement device that allows a very effective treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and is very comfortable to wear.

If you think you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea visit your primary care physician and your trusted dentist: We have been helping our patients with this problem for years to improve their quality of life by returning to good rest.
