Perimplantitis: the disease of dental implants

5 Aug 2022 | Pathologies

When a dental implant is loaded a process called "osseointegration": this means that the dental implant is joined to the bone on which it is loaded As if it were a natural tooth.

Precisely because of this dental implant needs the same care as a natural tooth: whether poor oral hygiene (and certain risk factors) can cause the periodontitis (inflammation of the gums which can lead to tooth loss), poor oral hygiene, and other factors can lead to the Peri-implantitis, a disease of dental implants which can lead to the plant leakage same.

Peri-implantitis is in fact a Inflammatory process affecting the tissues surrounding a dental implant and causes a loss of the bone support in which it is embedded.

I symptoms of peri-implantitis Are:

❌ reddening of the mucosa surrounding the implant.
❌ bleeding
❌ loss of supporting bone
❌ pain
❌ plant mobility

As we mentioned earlier one of the cause of peri-implantitis is a poor oral hygiene, but there are other reasons that lead to the onset of the disease, as well as risk factors:

⚠️ biomechanical stress generated by chewing, especially if the implant is not placed correctly
⚠️ cigarette smoke
⚠️ poor quality of supporting bone
⚠️ type of implant surface (rough surfaces retain more bacteria)

In patients suffering from peri-implantitis, in addition to the prescription of antibiotics, the periodontal debridement (or scaling) for remove tartar under the gum thereby eliminating inflammation and restoring gum tissue.
